Tom and I worked together for more than a decade, generally putting together stories for an education series called “What’s Cool in Our School.”

We expect our photojournalists at KARE to do a great job, and Tom always delivered, whether it was recording kids for my stories, doing underwater photography for feature stories, handling hard news, live shots — you name it.

Tom always looks for the most creative and best way to get something done, and he never does things halfway. I appreciate his professionalism in all areas.

Because my stories involve dealing with adults and children who can be four years old or seniors in high school, I very much appreciate Tom’s ability to make people comfortable in a situation they aren’t always comfortable with. (Being on camera.) Tom listens to people and makes them feel valued. That is a rare quality.

I met Tom the first time while working as the Toys for Tots Coordinator in Minnesota. I had never done any TV work before and was thrust into the spotlight by doing the morning show from our warehouse. Tom took a few minutes to ask me questions and noticing my nervousness, joked around with me while getting me ready to do the spot. His calm demeanor and genuine love for his work made doing the spot really easy and I let his supervisors know about his professionalism. From that point he became our Toys for Tots photojournalist. He also volunteered many hours in our warehouse with collection, distribution, and even logging hours on the forklift moving boxes around. Unquestioned character, volunteerism, professionalism, and genuine kindness describe Tom personally and professionally. I would love to work with him again on any project.
